CALL FOR A NEW COORDINATOR & LIAISON ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group (TWG)

The ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group (TWG) is inviting expressions of interest for a new TWG Coordinator and a Liaison with ICAZ.

Established in 2009 by the ICAZ International Committee and formally launched at the 11th ICAZ Conference in Paris in 2010, the TWG has developed into a highly active international network. Today, it brings together more than 150 members from over 20 countries.

Since its creation, the TWG has organised six international workshops, held in Paris (2010), Santander (2012), San Rafael (2014), Paris (2016), Ankara (2018), and Madrid (2022) and published its proceedings in Q1 & Q2 journals.

The group was created to provide a dedicated international forum for taphonomy, fostering wider dissemination of research and encouraging collaboration across archaeology, palaeontology, and related disciplines.

We are looking for a highly motivated person, devoted to taphonomy, with strong communication and good management skills, who can support the continued activity of the TWG and visibility through its different communication channels and liaison roles. The new coordinator will manage the webpage https://icaztaphonomywg.com/twg/

Researchers interested in contributing to the future of the ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group are warmly encouraged to get in touch.

Proceedings of the 6th ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group meeting

6th meeting. Madrid (Spain).2022.. Two leading congresses – TAPHOS  and the Taphonomy Working Group (TWG) of the ICAZ – in the same 2022 meeting  to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Efremov’s Taphonomy proposal as a scientific discipline.

The proceedings were published in special numbers in Historical Biology and Quaternary Science Advances (Volume 12 y 13)

9th International Conference on Taphonomy and Fossilisation (Taphos) and the 6th ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group (TWG‐ICAZ),

We are pleased to invite you to take part in the 9th International Conference on Taphonomy and Fossilisation (Taphos) and the 6th ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group (TWG‐ICAZ), which will take place in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid, Spain). The Conference will be held between Sunday 30th August and Sunday 6th September 2020, in the facilities of the Museo Arqueológico Regional de Madrid. It is organised by members of several Spanish institutions (CSIC, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Museo Geominero, Museo Arqueológico Regional, Dinopolis Foundation, Universidad de Cantabria), and is supported by the Spanish Paleontological Society, Transmitting Science, the International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ) and the TaphEn European network.

Since its creation in 2009, the TWG has maintain a high level of activity. It has organized five biannual conferences starting in the 11th ICAZ Conference. First meeting was held in Paris, France (2010), followed by Santander, Spain (2012), 3rd one in San Rafael, Argentina (2014), 4th in Paris, France (2016) and the last one in Ankara, Turkey (2018).

Regularly, the proceedings have been published in peer-reviewed journals including, by chronological order: International Journal of Osteoarchaeology (2012), Quaternary International (2014), Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences (2016), Historical Biology (2018) and Quaternaire (2018). Due to the high number of communications undertaken (79), The proceedings of the last meeting were published in two different journals revealing a notable increase of taphonomic studies in archaeozoology as well as a new generation of taphonomists. Curently, the TWG has more than 100 members from around the world.

Collaborative research projects are ongoing among TWG members such as the Global Weathering project. This project is led by Yolanda Fernandez Jalvo (MNCS, Madrid), Alexander H Parkinson (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) and Peter Andrews (NHM, London). It aims to study how weathering processes affect macromammal bones in different climates and environments all over the world. Worldwide taphonomists are invited to participated. The project has already started in Australia, Argentina and Spain.

In paralallel to the TWG, in January 2018 a European Network for Quaternary Taphonomy (TaphEN) was established in collaboration with several working-groups based in France, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal. This network is initially funded by the CNRS and led by Jean Philipp Brugal.  All the participants share similar goals on Taphonomy which favor fertile and active collaboration and exchange within a European network.

 

 

GLOBAL WEATHERING PROJECT

In 2014 within the Taphonomy Working Group meeting at the ICAZ in Argentina, it was planned to launch, among the worldwide taphonomist colleagues, a Global Weathering Project focused on how weathering affected macromammal bones in different climates and environments all over the world. This initiative is led by Yolanda Fernandez Jalvo (MNCS, Madrid), Alexander H Parkinson (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) and Peter Andrews (NHM, London). Following their extensive research on this topic, they set up the protocols of these worldwide experiment.

Here we include you all the information about why it was decided to undertake this project ( Why Global Weathering) and which are the protocols to follow if you want to participate. Any colleague from any country and region can take part in this global study, therefore it is important that all of us follow the same procedures in order the results can be compare objectively later on.
